Philadelphia will see new manufacturing jobs in the city due to its designation as an economic “hub” under the CHIPS and Science Act championed by Vice President Kamala Harris.

Signed into law in 2022, the CHIPS and Science Act creates manufacturing jobs, boosts economic growth, and improves national security by producing technology often made in China or other foreign countries.

The law creates 32 “hubs” across the country where private sectors, state and local governments, labor unions and nonprofit organizations will use federal grants to create technology.

The hubs will create a range of technology including semiconductor chips, used in thousands of products like computers, smartphones, and appliances. The semiconductor chip was created in the US – but today, only 10% of the world’s supply of semiconductor chips are manufactured here and 75% of the supply is manufactured in East Asia.

The CHIPs Act is one part of Vice President Harris’ agenda to invest in American manufacturing jobs. She and the administration have created 50,000 projects to rebuild roads and bridges, replace lead pipes, and build electric vehicles – and she’s working to make sure the people who make those projects possible are all well-paid union workers.
