Your Air Travel Rights Just Took a Hit

What’s Happening

The Trump administration is ending some protections that were designed to make sure you got your money back when a flight was delayed, cancelled, or disrupted in some other way.

What Biden-era Protections Are Ending

Here’s what’s on the chopping block:

  • A rule that would have required airlines to pay cash refunds, offer free rebooking, cover meals, lodging, and ground transportation when a disruption is caused by the airline.
  • Now, you will have to go through the hassle of submitting a request instead of getting your refund processed automatically after a flight is cancelled.
  • The protections that would’ve forced airlines to be more transparent about hidden fees—so you know exactly what you’re paying up front.
  • A rule that airlines refund baggage-related fees when bags are delayed—or refund services you paid for but didn’t receive.

Why This Is a Big Deal

  • These protections were steps toward keeping airlines from profiting from the cancellations and delays that stress us out!
  • The government is giving airlines the freedom to make us jump through hoops to get the refunds we clearly deserve.
  • Working people who fly on tight budgets, with limited time are at the most risk if they end up with sudden costs while traveling.

Bottom Line

If your flight is canceled, you are legally entitled to a refund—even under the rollback push. You may have to submit extra paperwork to get it, but the refund is still available. But many of the stronger consumer protections, like cash compensation, strict refund timing, and other services, are being reconsidered or withdrawn.

Airlines should not be allowed to dodge refunds or compensation when they cause flight disruptions—or hide fees in fine print. But that’s exactly where we’re heading unless we act.

The Fight Ahead

Many of the programs that help renters could face changes or even total shutdown for next year given the current debate in Washington. Working America will be joining our allies in advocating for a fair economy and a government that gives working families what they deserve. Our strength comes from you – our members. Only by acting together can we fight back against the greedy corporations and their friends.

We’re asking all Working Americans to pledge to stay informed about what policies our leaders are advancing that support a fair economy and protecting consumers. Sign up here if you pledge to be part of that mission and if you want Working America updates and opportunities about a fair economy.

We know that these are uncertain times, and many of us are concerned about the future. Go to workingamerica.org/gethelp for more guides and tips on navigating the economy and preparing for the unknown.
