- The ACP was the federal program that gave households discounts (up to $30/month, higher in some tribal areas) on internet service.
- As of May/June 2024, Congress did not renew funding, so no new applications are being accepted, and the program has ended.
What are the alternatives now?
With ACP gone, people who need more affordable internet have several other options. None fully replaces ACP’s support, but they can help reduce the cost of getting online. The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) helped over 23 million households stay connected. But Congress has cut off funding, which means no more $30/month discount and no new sign-ups. If you relied on ACP, you still have options to make your internet more affordable. Here are some more details about your alternatives:
1. Federal Lifeline Program
- What is it: A long-standing federal program that gives you about $9.25 off your monthly bill (higher for Tribal lands).
- Who qualifies: Low-income households or anyone enrolled in programs like SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, or Veterans Pension.
- How to apply: Go to lifelinesupport.org to check eligibility and apply.
2. Discounted Internet Plans from Providers
Many internet companies run their own low-income plans that can bring your bill down to $10–$20 a month. Examples with the links to their pages are as follows:
- Comcast Internet Essentials
- Spectrum Internet Assist
- AT&T Access
- Verizon Lifeline
- Cox Connect2Compete
- Mediacom Connect2Compete
Call your provider and ask: “Do you have a low-income plan?” You might qualify even if you didn’t for ACP.
3. State & Local Programs
- Broadband offices in every state are rolling out grants, voucher programs, and free hotspot initiatives.
- Many libraries, schools, and community centers loan Wi-Fi hotspots or provide free access.
- Check your state’s broadband office here: NTIA State Map.
4. Combine Your Options
Some households can stack programs:
- Lifeline + a low-income internet plan
- Local voucher + library hotspot access
- Together, this can cut your costs almost as much as ACP did.
Don’t Wait — Act Now
ACP is over, but affordable internet doesn’t have to be. Check your eligibility, call your provider, and tap into state and local programs today. Staying connected means access to school, work, healthcare, and community — and there are still ways to make it affordable.
