Food was not cheap before COVID-19, but the USDA estimates that the cost of food went up 23.6% from 2020-2024, and we’re the ones who are feeling that belt tighten.
We all have needed a hand at some point; there is no shame in asking for help. There are programs across the country that can help you pay for groceries and get emergency assistance when you need help putting food on the table.
Need emergency assistance?
- Call 211 to find government and private organizations near you if you need emergency support to get food.
- Call the USDA Hunger Hotline at 1-866-3-HUNGRY (1-866-348-6479) for English or 1-877-8-HAMBRE (1-877-842-6273) for Spanish

- If you have experienced a disaster recently, there may be Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programs (D-SNAP) are available to you as well.
Need more consistent support?
- If you are in need of ongoing assistance, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will help folks who make a certain amount with monthly funds to support your grocery shopping. The first step is contacting your local SNAP Benefits office.
- If you are 60 years old or older and struggling to pay for groceries, there are special programs designed to help you. Visit this website to learn more about the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program and the Commodity Supplemental Food Program.
Need support for your little ones?
- If you are pregnant or have recently had a baby, you can check your eligibility for the Women, Infants, and Children program to get the help you deserve.
- If you have kids who are school-aged, there may still be support out there for your family. Take a look at the School Lunch Program that could help your child out or the School Breakfast Program that can get their day started right!
